Some of the county’s top employers joined forces with Cumbria’s Future Leaders at an exciting new development event open to every teenager taking part in Dream Placement 2020. More than 170 people participated in the event which focused on helping young people to build confidence and develop skills and leadership qualities that they will need in their future careers. It was organised by the Centre for Leadership Performance (CfLP) in partnership with Energus and Dream Placement host companies, and sponsored by Sellafield Ltd.

The Dream Placement programme is continually evolving based on feedback from alumni and ambassadors. Cumbria Future Leaders – Agents for Change is the latest addition in response to this.

CV and Interview Workshop with Inspira and Energus – another Dream Placement Opportunity for development

Activities included workshops on writing CVs and interview skills with Inspira and Energus, as well as practical goal setting and networking tips with CfLP. Next Generation Executive Sellafield Ltd also held workshops to gain the views of young people on what changes they would like to see in their communities to shape the future of the county.

Everyone who attended was invited to contribute their ideas about the Cumbria Future Leaders Forum due to launch in 2020. CfLP Executive Director Sarah Glass explains: “Our host companies and collaborators at the Agents for Change event were hugely impressed by the calibre of the young people and their determination to succeed.  We were also encouraged by the way they embraced the opportunity to influence how the Future Leaders Forum will take shape and function – these young people are the ‘Agents for Change’ and represent the future of the county.”

Cumbria Future Leaders will be an active youth network connecting and brokering links with employers and other youth groups and young professionals. It will give young people an opportunity to exchange ideas and advice, share experiences, develop their leadership skills, network with business leaders and give them a voice to help shape the future of the county.

Sarah Glass adds: “We work closely with organisations including the Local Enterprise Partnership to ensure our activities are aligned with the needs of businesses, young people and the county itself.  We very much see Cumbria Future Leaders evolving and being shaped by the young people themselves, supported by CfLP and in partnership with our business collaborators. We hope it will fill the void which young people tell us exists in Cumbria at the moment, enabling them to build their leadership skills and support networks, link to opportunities and other young people and maintain contacts with businesses and each other as they progress through education and build their careers.”
